Etymology: < scientific Latin Agapanthus, genus name ( C. L. L'Héritier de Brutelle Sertum Anglicum (1788) 17) < ancient Greek ἀγάπη love (see agape n.) + ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.). Compare French agapanthe (1812).

Any plant of the South African genus Agapanthus (family Amaryllidaceae), comprising herbaceous perennials that typically have narrow, strap-like leaves and large umbels of blue, violet, or white lily-like flowers; esp. (in later use) any of the many varieties and hybrids (chiefly of A. praecox) commonly cultivated for ornament. Also (in form Agapanthus): the genus itself.
