Etymology: < the name of Caliban, a character in Shakespeare's Tempest, ‘a saluage and deformed slaue’ (Dram. Personæ). Apparently a variant of cannibal n., or perhaps actually a form of Carib. It does not appear, however, where Shakespeare found the form.
A man of degraded bestial nature. Also attributive and in other combinations, as Caliban-like adj.
