The word occurs also as Italian calafatare, Spanish calafatear, -fetear; usually believed to be < Arabic qalafa, in 2nd conjugation qallafa to caulk a ship with palm-tree fibre, etc.; compare medieval Greek καλαϕάτης caulker. The French form calfeutrer is conjectured to have been influenced by feutre felt.
