单词 agami
释义

agamin.

Brit. /ˈaɡəmi/, U.S. /ˈæɡəmi/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French agami.
Etymology: In sense 1 < French agami (1731; 1664 as †agamy ) < Carib akami . Compare Spanish agamí (1788 or earlier). Compare also Portuguese agami (1837 or earlier), although this may also reflect an independent borrowing < the Tupi etymon of yakamik n. In sense 2 < French agami ( Buffon Hist. nat. des oiseaux (1783) VII. 382, the passage translated in quot. 1793; in full héron agami ), probably < scientific Latin agami , specific name (J. F. Gmelin in Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 13, 1788) I. 629 ), of uncertain origin, perhaps a transferred use of sense 1. For Buffon's tentative explanation of the semantic transfer (or perhaps confusion) of the names of the two birds, see quot. 1793 at sense 2.
