Origin: A borrowing from Latin; probably partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: Latin affectuosus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin affectuosus charged with emotion, earnest, heartfelt, kindly disposed, affectionate (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian; from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin affectus affect n. + -ōsus -ous suffix, probably partly after Middle French, French affectueux ardent, eager (13th cent. in Old French), moving (1568), affectionate (1611). Compare Old Occitan affectuos (1370), Catalan afectuós (14th cent.), Spanish afectuoso (15th cent.), Portuguese afetuoso (15th cent.), Italian affettuoso (a1321). Compare also the foreign-language parallels at affectuously adv.With sense 1 compare effectuous adj. 2 and note at effectual adj.
