Forms: late Middle English affectualy, late Middle English affectuelly, late Middle English–1500s 1900s– affectually.
Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Apparently a borrowing from French. Or perhaps a borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: French affectuel ; Latin affectualis , -ly suffix2, affectual adj.
Etymology: Apparently < Anglo-Norman and Middle French affectuel (a1402) or its etymon post-classical Latin affectualis affectual adj. + -ly suffix2; compare Anglo-Norman affectuelment (a1412) and Middle French afectuelment (a1402), and later affectual adj. In 20th cent. apparently re-formed < affectual adj. + -ly suffix2.
