Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French affectuel ardent, eager (a1402; in Anglo-Norman only attested in tresaffectuel ) and its etymon post-classical Latin affectualis concerned with or appealing to the emotions, heart-stirring (13th cent. in British sources; earlier in continental sources in sense ‘affecting temporarily, depending on circumstances’ (5th cent.)) < classical Latin affectus affect n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Apparently re-formed in 20th cent. < classical Latin affectus affect n. + -al suffix1. Compare earlier affectually adv. Compare also earlier affectuous adj., affective adj., and effectual adj.
