Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese caipirinha.
Etymology: < Brazilian Portuguese caipirinha < caipira hick, yokel (1872; probably alteration of caipora one-legged supernatural being bringing bad luck, omen (1855 or earlier; c. 1767 as coropira ) < Tupi kaapora < kaa bush land, scrub + -pora person who inhabits; perhaps compare Tupi kurupira devil) + -inha , diminutive suffix (see -ine suffix4).
A cocktail originating in Brazil, typically consisting of cachaça, lime or lemon juice, sugar, and crushed ice.
