Forms: 1700s– cabriolet, 1800s cabroley (in a representation of nonstandard speech), 1800s cabrioley (in representations of nonstandard speech).
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French cabriolet.
Etymology: < French cabriolet kind of light horse-drawn vehicle with a folding hood (1755, so called on account of its elastic bounding motion), kind of ladies' bonnet (a1763, so called on account of its similarity to the vehicle's hood), kind of small armchair with a curved back (1803 or earlier; compare fauteuil en cabriolet (a1780 or earlier), probably so called on account of its similarity to the vehicle's seat) < cabrioler to leap, bound (1584 in Middle French; < cabriole capriole n.) + -et -et suffix1. With sense 1a compare slightly earlier cabriole n. 3. With sense 3 compare earlier capriole n. 3.

a. A light two-wheeled chaise drawn by a single horse, having a large folding hood and usually an apron to cover the lap and legs of the occupants; such a vehicle licensed to transport passengers to a destination of their choice in return for payment of a fare. Cf. cab n.2 1a and note at that sense. Now chiefly historical.
