Forms: 1600s– cabriole, 1700s cabrioll.
Origin: Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: French cabriole ; cabriolet n.
Etymology: Originally < French cabriole capriole n. In sense 3 apparently shortened < cabriolet n. (although cabriolet n. 1 is first attested slightly later). In sense 4 and in Compounds perhaps also shortened < cabriolet n. (compare cabriolet n. 2 and later cabriole leg n.).With sense 4 compare Dutch zetel en cabriolé kind of armchair (1765), probably reflecting an earlier use of French fauteuil en cabriolet (see cabriolet n.).
