Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili bwana.
Etymology: < Swahili bwana, buana master, also used as a title of courtesy or respect, further etymology uncertain, but apparently a loanword.
East African.
A title of courtesy or respect prefixed to the surname or first name of a man. In early use also: a master. Cf. Bw n.
