Etymology: modern Latin, coined in Dutch (C. M. Berkhout De Schimmelgeslachten Monilia, Oidium, Oospora en Torula (1923) 41), feminine of Latin candidus white: see candid adj.
A yeast-like mycelium-forming parasitic fungus of the genus Candida, which includes species causing disease in people and animals; spec. C. albicans, common as a commensal in the alimentary tract and the vagina, and the cause of thrush.
