Etymology: < Latin candidus white, glistening (also used in many figurative senses as below), < stem of candēre to be white, to glisten. Perhaps immediately < French candide, 16th cent. in Littré. (Not in Shakespeare, Bible, Cotgrave, or Cockeram 1623.)
