单词 candian
释义

Candiann.adj.

Brit. /ˈkandɪən/, U.S. /ˈkændiən/
Forms: 1500s– Candian, 1600s Candyan.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Candy , -an suffix
Etymology: < Candy, former name in English of the city of Heraklion, Crete, and of the island of Crete ( < post-classical Latin Candia (11th cent. or earlier)) + -an suffix. Compare Candy n.1Compare Middle French, French Candien, noun (1537 or earlier) and adjective (1556 or earlier). Candia ( < Byzantine Greek Χάνδαξ Heraklion) was the name given to the city in Italian and post-classical Latin during Crete's period as an overseas colony of the Republic of Venice 1204–1669, and was also applied to the island itself. The place name is also attested in English contexts in the form Candia (1482 or earlier). Crete was a major centre for the cultivation and refining of sugar and an important source for its exportation to Britain during the medieval and early modern period. The place name probably ultimately derives < Arabic rabḍ al-ḵandaq, literally ‘suburb of the entrenchment’, the name given to the town after an entrenchment constructed c820.
