单词 adonai
释义

Adonain.

Brit. /ˈadənʌɪ/, /adəˈnʌɪ/, /əˈdəʊnʌɪ/, /əˈdəʊneɪˌʌɪ/, U.S. /ˌædəˈnaɪ/, /ˌɑdəˈnaɪ/, /ˌɑdəˈnɔɪ/, /ˌædəˈnaɪˌi/, /ˌædoʊˈneɪˌaɪ/
Forms: Middle English–1500s Adonay, Middle English– Adonai, 1800s– Adonee, 1800s– Adonoy, 1900s– Adonoi.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Etymons: Latin Adonai; Hebrew 'ăḏōnāy.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Adonai (Vulgate) and its etymon Hebrew 'ăḏōnāy, lit. ‘my Lord’ < 'ăḏōnē Lord, (in extended use) a title of God (construct state plural of 'āḏōn lord, master, cognate with Phoenician 'dn (probably adōn : see Adonis n.); see also note below) + -y, 1st person singular possessive suffix. Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French Adonay (c1325 or earlier; French Adonaϊ).The use of the plural form as a title of God has often been called a plural of majesty, as has the grammatically plural form Hebrew ĕlōhīm Elohim n. However, it is questionable whether the concept of ‘plural of majesty’ is applicable to either of these titles of God. As Hebrew 'ăḏōnī ‘my Lord’, formed from the singular form of the same base noun with the 1st person singular possessive suffix, is used as a form of address for a human lord or master, it is possible that the Masoretes artificially vocalized the form as a plural in order to distinguish the use as a title of God from the use as a title of human superiors. In the Septuagint the Hebrew title of God is rendered by ancient Greek Κύριε (see Kyrie eleison n.). N.E.D. (1884) also gives a variant pronunciation (ædonēi·əi) /ædəʊˈneɪaɪ/.
Christian Church and Judaism.
(A title of) God, esp. in the Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures; compare almighty n. Also as int.The name Adonai was traditionally substituted by many Jewish people, in reading, for the sacred name of God denoted by the Tetragrammaton, YHWH (see discussion in the etymology at Jehovah n.), and is usually rendered as ‘Lord’ in English translations. In modern Jewish usage, Hashem n. (haššēm, literally ‘the name’), is more commonly substituted.
