Etymology: Partly < buttonhole v. + -er suffix1, and partly (in sense 3) < buttonhole n. + -er suffix1. With sense 1 compare earlier button holder n. 1. With sense 3 compare French boutonnière boutonnière n.
1. A person who (habitually) accosts another and detains him or her in conversation as if by taking hold of a buttonhole on his or her clothing. Also in extended use. Cf. earlier button holder n. 1.
