Now historical.
An Irish political, cultural, and social movement of the mid 19th cent., espousing nationalist principles and eventually playing a leading role in a failed rebellion in July 1848. Frequently attributive.The Young Ireland movement was for a time linked with Daniel O'Connell's Repeal Association (see repeal n. 2b(a)), but broke away during the mid 1840s. The movement was disbanded after the arrest of many of its leaders in 1848.
