Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Greek ζηλωτικός ; zealot n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: Partly < ancient Greek ζηλωτικός jealous, in Byzantine Greek also zealous < ζηλωτής zealot n. + -ικός -ic suffix, and partly < zealot n. + -ic suffix. Compare earlier zealotical adj.Compare post-classical Latin zeloticus (14th cent. in an isolated attestation). With α. forms compare discussion at zealator n. and zealot n.
