Origin: A borrowing from Cornish. Etymon: Cornish sâwn.
Etymology: < Cornish sâwn cleft, fissure, ravine, cove (a1709; also as sawan (1790)), cognate with Welsh safn mouth, jaws, palate (c1275), Middle Breton staffn (Breton staoñ palate), probably ultimately < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek στόμα mouth (see stoma n.).
English regional (Cornwall).
A fissure or cave in a coastal cliff.
