Etymology: Apparently < early Scandinavian (compare Swedish jolster and also the derivative Old Icelandic ilstri (implying an underlying *jǫlstr ), both denoting a kind of willow), apparently < the Germanic base of Old Dutch elis , Old Saxon els alder (see alder n.¹) + a suffix forming derivatives (perhaps the Germanic suffix forming names of trees: see maple tree n.).

Obsolete. rare.
