A butter substitute made by adding milk to oleomargarine (a fatty substance obtained from purified animal fat); artificial butter.The word butterine ceased to be used commercially in the United Kingdom after an 1887 Act of Parliament decreed that all butter imitations were to be sold under the name margarine (50 & 51 Vict.; repealed in 1928).
