Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin zingel.
Etymology: < scientific Latin zingel specific name (1766 in Perca zingel (Linnaeus); 1817 as genus name Zingel ) < German Zingel (1575 or earlier, in Gesner), further origin uncertain: perhaps an extended use of Zingel saddle girth, curtain wall (both already in Middle High German) < Old French, Middle French cengle saddle girth, curtain wall (see cingle n.). Compare zingelin perch n.
Any of several bottom-dwelling freshwater fish of the percoid genus Zingel, found in certain streams and rivers of western and central Europe; spec. Z. zingel of the Danube and Dniester river systems.
