Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; apparently modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: English Zindik , Zindiq n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < Zindik, variant of Zindiq n. + -ite suffix1, apparently after French Zindikite (1689 or earlier: see note). Compare slightly later Zendicism n.Compare French †Zindiki , in the same sense (1670 in a translation of the passage cited in quot. 1667 at Zindiq n.); this French passage is referenced in 1689 in an encyclopedia entry (under Zindikite ), which in turn appears to have influenced quot. 1694. Sometimes associated with Zend n. (compare quot. 1755 and the discussion at Zindiq n.).
Now rare and historical.
A member or adherent of an Islamic sect in Persia or the Ottoman Empire; (also occasionally) a member or adherent of a pre-Islamic Persian sect. Cf. Zindiq n.In 18th cent. use, apparently designating the same group referred to in the early quotations at Zindiq n., and explicitly interpreted as a heretical Islamic sect.

1755 New & Compl. Dict. Arts & Sci. IV. 3431/1 The mahometans have a sect which they call zendikites, who are said to be the sadducees of mahometanism, denying providence and the resurrection, believing the transmigration of souls, and following the zend of the magi.
1821 C. Bucke On Beauties, Harmonies, & Sublimities of Nature IV. 306 There is a sect among the Mahometans, called the Zindikites, who believe neither in the providence of the sovereign power, nor in the immortality of the soul.
1877 W. Smith & H. Wace Dict. Christian Biogr. I. 478/1 Hareth, son of Amr,..who is said by Hamza to have been a Zendikite, was of Kendite race.

2006 J. I. Israel Enlightenment Contested xxiv. 638 Della Valle's account he too saw as evidence that Abu Muslim's teaching and that of the Zindikites were indeed akin to Spinozism.
