Etymology: Spanish, < zapato shoe. N.E.D. (1921) gives the pronunciation as (þapateā·ðo) /θapateˈaðo/.
a. A flamenco dance which involves complex rhythmic syncopated stamping of the heels and toes in imitation of castanets.
