yo-he-ho theory
yo-he-ho theory n. a theory proposing that human speech originated in sounds produced in or to accompany the performance of strenuous physical tasks; cf. bow-wow theory at bow-wow int. and n. 2b. [After bow-wow theory at bow-wow int. and n. 2b.
The theory was originally proposed by Ludwig Noiré and was critiqued by F. Max Müller in Science of Thought (1887) I. 300–306. It was first named in the same year in two reviews of Müller's book (see quots. 1887 for yo-ho theory n. at yo-ho int. and n. Compounds and 1887 for yo-heave-ho theory n. at yo-heave-ho int. and n. Compounds); in the subsequent year Müller himself used the form yo-heho theory (see quot. 1888), which has become its usual name.]
