Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin admittibilis ; admit v., -able suffix.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < post-classical Latin admittibilis (from 14th cent. in British sources; < admittere admit v. + -ibilis -ible suffix); in later use (in β. forms) < admit v. + -able suffix. Compare later admissable adj.
Acceptable, allowable, valid. In later use also: capable of being or having the right to be admitted to a place, position, etc. Cf. admissible adj.
