Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: yester- comb. form, year n.
Etymology: < yester- comb. form + year n.Popularized by D. G. Rossetti (see quot. 1869 at sense A.), who used it to translate Middle French antan the previous year (14th cent.; 12th cent. in Old French as adverb in sense ‘last year’; < classical Latin ante annum a year ago).
Somewhat poetic.
