Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: yellow adj., ring n.1
Etymology: Apparently < yellow adj. (compare the β. forms at that entry) + ring n.1, probably so called on account of the bird's markings, which form a yellow ring round its neck.The longer phrase yellow yowlring was formed after the first element had ceased to be transparent.
Scottish and English regional (northern). Now rare.
In later use more fully yellow yowlring. The yellowhammer, Emberiza citrinella.
