单词 yepsen
释义

yepsenn.

/ˈjɛps(ə)n/
Forms: Middle English ȝyspun, -on, yepsene, yespen, Middle English ȝespyn, yespon, ȝespe, (? ȝelspe, ȝelpe), 1600s yeaspen, yaspen, yaspin, yeapsond, 1600s–1800s yeepsen, 1700s yepsond, eapns, espin, 1700s–1800s yepsintle, 1800s ipson.
Etymology: Middle English ȝespon, ȝyspon, yepsen, probably < unrecorded Old English *giepsen, *giespen, corresponding to Middle Low German gespe, gepse, (göpse), Low German gepse, geps, göpse, göps (German gäspe).Various other formations are found in Low German dialects, e.g. göppsche, göpske, göppelsche, -ske; also early Flemish gaspe , gaps , Dutch dialect gap(e , Low German gâpske , gäppelsche , -ske . Affinity of sense suggests derivation from the Germanic stem gaup- appearing in Old High German *goufana (in dative plural coufanôm ), Middle High German goufen , later and dialect gauf , Old Norse gaupn (whence gowpen n.). In the present state of the evidence it is impossible to determine the relationship of these forms and of Lithuanian źiùpsnis = as much as can be seized with two or three fingers, a small handful or armful.
dialect ? Obsolete.
The two hands placed together so as to form a bowl-shaped cavity; as much as can be held in this; = gowpen n. 1.
