单词 à la mode
释义

à la modeadv.adj.n.prep.

Brit. /ˌa la ˈməʊd/, /ˌa lə ˈməʊd/, /ˌɑː lɑː ˈməʊd/, U.S. /ˌɑ lɑ ˈmoʊd/
Forms:

α. 1600s alamod (Scottish), 1600s ala-mode, 1600s allamode, 1600s 1800s– a la mode, 1600s–1700s ala mode, 1600s–1800s a-la-mode, 1600s– alamode, 1600s– à la mode, 1800s à-la-mode.

β. 1600s all a mode, 1600s all a-mode, 1600s–1700s all-a-mode.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French à la mode.
Etymology: < French à la mode in the manner or fashion specified by the following adjective (late 14th cent. in Middle French in a la mode Lombarde in the Lombardic manner), in the manner or fashion of a specified person, place, or thing (2nd half of the 15th cent. in a la mode de Lombardie , a la mode du pays ), in accord with contemporary taste, fashionable (1549; 1651 designating a style of cooking in boeuf à la mode : see beef à la mode n. at Compounds 2, à la mode beef n. at Compounds 1) < à la à la prep. + mode mode n. Compare Italian alla moda (1648; probably after French), and also early modern German alamode (adjective and adverb) fashionable, fashionably, Alamode (noun) fashionable clothing (17th cent.), Dutch alamode in the manner of (a specified place), (adjective) fashionable (17th cent.), designating a kind of fabric (18th cent.), both < French.Earlier currency in sense D. is perhaps implied by the following:1594 T. Nashe Vnfortunate Traveller sig. D My handes without gloues, all a more [perh. read mode] French. In β. forms apparently showing reanalysis as an English phrase containing all adv. and an adjective or adverb in a- prefix3 (as e.g. all agog at agog adv., all ablaze at ablaze adj. 1, etc.). Compare also the following, apparently < Italian alla moda , with alteration of the ending (compare e.g. -ado suffix and see discussion at that entry):a1667 P. Mundy Trav. (1936) V. 133 The King, nobles, knights, pages, etts., had great plumes platted thicke circularwise over the brimmes of their hatts, a la modo.
