Etymology: < French à la carte, literally ‘(according) to the menu’ (1813) < à (preposition) to, at (see a- prefix5) + la , feminine definite article (see La adj.; compare à la prep.) + carte menu (1803 in this sense: see carte n.1).

In a restaurant: designating food that can be ordered as separately priced items from a menu, rather than as part of a set meal; of or relating to this way of ordering. Frequently as postmodifier. Also in extended use. Cf. prix fixe n., table d'hôte n.
