Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: Yiddish yenta, yente.
Etymology: < Yiddish yenta, yente < the female forename Yenta , Yente ( < Italian gentile noble, high-born, kind, amiable: see gentle adj.).The extended use was popularized through the name of Yente Telebende, a fictional henpecking wife created by ‘B. Kovner’ (Jacob Adler, 1874–1974), U.S. humorist of Jewish origin, who wrote humorous stories for Yiddish newspapers in New York from the end of the 19th cent.
North American colloquial.
In Jewish usage: a noisy, vulgar, interfering, or annoying woman; (now) esp. one who gossips, a busybody; one given to nagging or scolding, a shrew.
