3. (originally †sultan flower (also sultan's flower).) Either of two species of sweet-scented annuals, brought originally from the East, usually distinguished as the purple or white sweet sultan, Centaurea (Amberboa) moschata, and the yellow (sweet) sultan, C. (A.) suaveolens.
