yellow stick n. Scottish humorous (now disused) (in parts of the Hebrides) used (in expressions such as religion of the yellow stick) to refer, generally depreciatively, to Protestantism, the adoption of which in some places was said to have been enforced by the threat of punishment.Various explanations have been offered for the origin of this expression, or of the Scottish Gaelic of which it may be a translation: see for example quots. 1851, 1903.
