Etymology: < the name of Byrnes Mathias Young (1868–1964), U.S. businessman and amateur gardener, who first created the cross in Louisiana in 1905 + berry n.¹ Compare slightly earlier Young dewberry n.The hybrid was first released commercially in 1926.

A cultivated hybrid bramble derived from a cross between a blackberry–raspberry hybrid and a cultivated variety of North American blackberry; the large reddish-black fruit of this shrub, similar to the loganberry.
