A young man or woman; spec. a person who is no longer considered a child, but has not reached the age of majority.Variously interpreted in legal contexts at different times and in different places.In the 19th and early 20th cent. frequently used of a young woman, in order to avoid the connotations of social class implicit in the use of ‘girl’, ‘woman’, or ‘lady’ (see notes at girl n. 2b, lady n. 5a, woman n. 7).
