Etymology: < year n. + long adj.1Compare Old English gēarlanges (adverb) for a year ( < year n. + -longs suffix) and Old Icelandic árlengis, with the same sense. Compare also Middle Dutch jaerlanc, Middle Low German jārlanc, Middle High German jārlanc, all adverbs in sense ‘for a year’.
1. That lasts for a year, or continues throughout the year. Formerly also: †that has lasted for years in succession, (sometimes) age-old (obsolete).
