Etymology: Probably a variant of wreath n., with failure of lengthening in open syllables.With sense 3 compare earlier frith n.2 4. N.E.D. (1928) gives the pronunciation as (riþ) /rɪθ/.
Obsolete.
1. A ring-shaped pad of hay, cloth, etc., worn in order to provide support or cushioning when carrying heavy objects on the head; = wreath n. 1d. rare.
