1. The style or school of art in Japan which culminated in the 12th and 13th centuries and dealt with Japanese subjects in a distinctively Japanese (rather than Chinese) way. Usually as Yamato-e n. (also †Yamato-we) [e picture] , Yamato-ryū n. [-ryū style, originally stream, school]
