Origin: Partly a borrowing from French. Apparently also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French admirance ; admire v., -ance suffix.
Etymology: Originally < Middle French admirance admiration, astonishment (c1450) < admirer admire v. + -ance -ance suffix. In later use apparently re-formed < admire v. + -ance suffix; compare admirant adj. Compare earlier admiring n., admire n., and admiration n.
Now rare.
The action of admiring something or someone; admiration.
