Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Arabic wuḍūʾ; Turkish vużū; Persian ważūʾ, wużūʾ.
Etymology: In α. forms < Arabic wuḍūʾ purity, cleanliness ( < waḍuʾa to be pure, clean). In β. forms < Ottoman Turkish vużū and its etymon Persian ważūʾ, wużūʾ ( < Arabic), both specifically denoting the ritual.In quot. 1712 via post-classical Latin wodou, uninflected (1705 in the passage translated). N.E.D. (1928) (at Woodoo) gives the pronunciation as (wudū·) /wuːˈduː/.

The ritual washing of parts of the body before prayer or handling the Qur'an. Cf. abdest n.This washing ritual is also referred to as the ‘lesser ablution’ in contrast to the ‘greater ablution’ of ghusl (ghusl n.).
