Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish yortsayt.
Etymology: < Yiddish yortsayt (15th cent.) < German Jahrzeit Christian celebration of the anniversary of a person's death (15th cent.), specific use of Jahrzeit anniversary (already in Middle High German as jārzīt ; < jār year n. + zīt time: see tide n.). Compare (with similar motivation) earlier year-time n. at year n. Compounds. Compare also earlier year's mind n., year-day n. 2, year's day n. 2, and also anniversary n. 1.Compare Middle Low German jārtīt, jārgetīde, both denoting a Christian celebration of the anniversary of a person's death.
Judaism.
In Jewish tradition: the anniversary of the death of a parent or other close relative, marked by the burning of a memorial candle, the recitation of the Mourner's Kaddish (Kaddish n.) and, in some communities, by fasting, religious study, and charitable works.The date of the death and its commemoration are traditionally reckoned according to the Hebrew rather than the Gregorian calendar.
