Etymology: Apparently < German Zephirol (G. Domagk 1935, in Deutsche med. Wochenschr. 24 May 830/1; perhaps < Zephir , variant of Zephyr zephyr n. + -ol -ol suffix, although the precise semantic motivation is unclear), with suffix substitution (see -an suffix).

Pharmacology.

A preparation of benzalkonium chloride used as an antiseptic.
