Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin zensi-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin zensi- (formations in which are found from at least the early 16th cent.), combining form of zensus (see zenzic n.).Found in a small number of mathematical terms (exemplified below), chiefly adaptations from Latin, in the 16th and 17th centuries. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin and Greek origin.
Mathematics. Obsolete. rare.
Used (and often reduplicated) with the sense ‘square’ to form terms denoting the power or root of a number.
