Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly formed within English, by compounding. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: worth n.1, mind n.1; worth n.1, mind n.1, -th suffix1.
Etymology: Probably partly (i) < worth n.1 + mind n.1, and partly (ii) < worth n.1 + mind n.1 + -th suffix1. Perhaps compare also Old English gemynt (see mint n.3).The original sense of the compound is often explained as ‘remembrance of worth’. In Old English usually a strong masculine or strong feminine (as strong feminine, sometimes showing indeclinable forms in -u ); perhaps also a strong neuter. The later prevalence of the form with final -t probably reflects either devoicing following loss of stress, or assimilation to -th suffix1; association with Old English gemynt or related mint n.3 is also possible.
Obsolete.
Honour; worship, reverence; glory.
