单词 butskellism
释义

Butskellismn.

Brit. /ˈbʌtskᵻlɪz(ə)m/, U.S. /ˈbətskəˌlɪz(ə)m/
Origin: Formed within English, by blending. Etymons: proper names Butler , Gaitskell , -ism suffix.
Etymology: Blend of the names of Richard Austen Butler (1902–82), Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer (1951–5) and Hugh Todd Naylor Gaitskell (1906–63), Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer (1950–1) and subsequently Shadow Chancellor + -ism suffix.Ian Trethowan, in a private letter to Edward Playfair in 1987, attributed the coinage to Richard Fort MP: ‘Yes, he [sc. Fort] did invent ‘Butskellism’. It was over lunch at the Reform; Norman McRae (our host) completed the trio...We were having a general discussion about the political-cum-economic situation, and it is our recollection that Richard coined the actual word. Norman then went off and wrote the Economist leader.’ McCrae's article also uses Butskell as the proper name of a fictitious composite of Butler and Gaitskell:1954 Economist 13 Feb. 440/1 Mr Butskell is already a well-known figure in dinner table conversations in both Westminster and Whitehall, and the time has come to introduce him to a wider audience. He is a composite of the present Chancellor and the previous one.
British Politics.
The economic policy of Richard ‘Rab’ Butler, Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer (1951–5), regarded as largely indistinguishable from that of Labour's Hugh Gaitskell, his predecessor in the post (1950–1) and later Shadow Chancellor; advocacy of this policy. Later also more generally: the centrist attitudes and policies of both Labour and Conservative parties during the post-war period, which led to an unexpected measure of agreement on such matters as law, education, social policy, and defence.
