单词 butlery
释义

butleryn.

Brit. /ˈbʌtləri/, U.S. /ˈbətləri/
Forms: Middle English botelary, Middle English botelerie, Middle English botelerye, Middle English buttillary, Middle English butillerye, Middle English buttellerye, Middle English buttlarye, Middle English butelary (in a late copy), 1600s– butlery.
Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French botelerie ; butler n., -y suffix3.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman botelerie, butellerie, butillerie and Old French boteillerie, Middle French bouteillerie (French bouteillerie ) buttery, wine cellar, this as a department of a royal or noble household (12th cent.) < bouteille bottle n.1 + -erie -ery suffix. In later use perhaps also partly < butler n. + -y suffix3.Recorded earlier in surnames, e.g. Henry de la Botelerie (1253), Nicholaus de la Botyllerye (1255), although these probably reflect the Anglo-Norman word. Compare post-classical Latin buticularia , botellaria , butellaria butler's room or pantry (frequently from 13th cent. in British and continental sources; frequently from 12th cent. denoting the office of butler). Compare also buttery n.1
Originally: a storeroom for provisions, esp. wine; cf. buttery n.1 1 (now historical); the provision and serving of drink as a department of a royal or noble household. Later: a room in a large house, usually located between the kitchen and dining room, used for the storage of dishes, glassware, cutlery, etc., and sometimes also for serving or storing food and drink (cf. butler's pantry n. at butler n. Compounds).
