Etymology: < the genitive of butcher n. + broom n. Apparently so called on account of the appearance and texture of the stiff, spiny tips of its leaves (although compare also quot. 1847 at sense 1).
1. Any of the low evergreen shrubs constituting the chiefly Mediterranean genus Ruscus (family Liliaceae), having stiff flattened shoots (cladodes or phylloclades) that function as leaves; esp. R. aculeatus, the only species found in Britain, which has spiny tips.
