Origin: Apparently formed within English, by blending. Etymons: wad n.1, wedge n.
Etymology: Apparently a blend of wad n.1 and wedge n. (compare sense 4 at that entry).
Originally English regional (chiefly midlands). Now British colloquial.
A bulky mass; a chunk or lump; a wad of paper, banknotes, etc. Hence also: a huge amount, a lot.
