Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: work n., mistress n.
Etymology: < work n. + mistress n., after workmaster n. In early use also after Middle French, French ouvriere ouvrière n. With use as a personification of nature compare early modern Dutch werkmeesterse (c1560 in a translation of Erasmus, rendering classical Latin opifex opifex n.). Compare earlier workwoman n.
Now rare.
